The goal: Bring Heartwood Meadow back into bloom by helping the animals notice each other again.
Your child’s part: Your child reads the feelings on faces, works out why someone is sad and shows Poppy how to ask before helping. As the animals start noticing each other, the meadow comes back into bloom in time to welcome new neighbours.
Kindness and empathy mean noticing how others feel and choosing to show care. Children practise reading faces, listening and doing small thoughtful things.
Just gentle ideas to help you choose.
The story goal: Bring Heartwood Meadow back into bloom by helping the animals notice each other again.

Poppy says: “Oh dear. Which flower feels happy? Which one feels sad? Which one feels cross?”Poppy
Boing! Poppy's ears pop up. "Look, Explorer! The Feelings Garden!"
Every flower here has a face. A sunny yellow flower. A droopy blue flower. A spiky red flower. But the wind blew their name cards away. Whoosh!
First, a choice: 3 options
On the printed page: Point to the flower that matches your grown-up's face.
By the end they have: Spot the face added to the toolbox.
You will need: The flower page in the book
Smaller step if needed: Just do happy and sad today.
The grown-up’s part: Make your faces really big and a bit silly. If your child picks a different flower, ask what they saw rather than correcting.
At bedtime, find one happy face in a picture book and say Spot the face! like Poppy.
What it practises: Practise spotting happy, sad and cross on a face by looking at the eyes and the mouth.
