The goal: Bring Heartwood Meadow back into bloom by helping the animals notice each other again.
Your child’s part: Your child reads the feelings on faces, works out why someone is sad and shows Poppy how to ask before helping. As the animals start noticing each other, the meadow comes back into bloom in time to welcome new neighbours.
Kindness and empathy mean noticing how others feel and choosing to show care. Children practise reading faces, listening and doing small thoughtful things.
Just gentle ideas to help you choose.
The story goal: Bring Heartwood Meadow back into bloom by helping the animals notice each other again.

Poppy says: “Oh dear. The flowers look so muddled without their names. I want to put the labels back, but I always guess too fast.”Poppy
Inside the Feelings Garden, every flower has a little face in its petals. One flower is smiling. One is frowning. One has its mouth open wide, like an O.
Each flower used to have a label with its feeling on it. But last night a big wind blew all the labels into a heap by the gate.
First, a choice: 3 options
On the printed page: Draw a line from each flower to its label.
By the end they have: Feelings flower set matched; Face clues added to the toolbox.
You will need: The flower page (or any paper) · A mirror or a shiny spoon (optional) · Crayons
Smaller step if needed: Match three flowers (happy, sad, cross) and copy just those.
The grown-up’s part: If your child's match differs from yours, ask what they noticed. Faces can mean more than one thing.
At teatime or in a picture book, spot one feeling face and tell your grown-up which face clue gave it away.
What it practises: Practise reading feelings from faces by looking at three clues: eyes, mouth and eyebrows.
